There's Hope in the System: Towards a Strength-Driven Design Approach to Support the Information Work of Sheltered Emerging Adults

Public

This dissertation asks how can researchers more equitably design sociotechnical interventions to support the information work of sheltered emerging adults. Through two research studies, I explore the technology use in fulfilling the information needs among this population as well as how their environment impacts their strengths and information practices. I also unpack how a homeless shelter network (HSN) constrains the strengths of sheltered emerging adults. I frame the strengths of the sheltered emerging adults within the context of their broader sociotechnical system, the HSN, through two lenses – information poverty and information marginalization. My research ultimately works toward identifying opportunities for sociotechnical interventions to understand the context and support the sheltered emerging adults in their information work through a strength-driven design approach.
