Energy-Efficient Computing through Approximate Arithmetic

Public

Power and energy are becoming the limiting factors for computer designs and systems, and energy efficient functional units are getting more popular in such systems. Some of the design methodologies that are getting more common include voltage overscaling and employing imprecise instructions. These functional units need to be characterized correctly in order to achieve optimality in computer architecture designs. In addition to characterizing existing ones, new energy efficient functional units should be designed specifically addressing the emerging issues. Finally, new algorithms should be designed to improve energy efficiency even further. In this work we have characterized and categorized current voltage over-scaled functional units, designed new energy efficient functional units that follow the new trends and a novel special purpose power-efficient compression algorithm are introduced.
